Resetting the Play Count in iTunes
An iTunes Tutorial
Created: 10/07/2005 Updated: 01/21/2009 Authors: Jon Accarrino & Bernie Maas

What's your favorite song? You may find this surprising, but iTunes can answer that question for you. iTunes registers the Play Count of a song each time it is played on your computer. For example, play the same song 3 times and the song's Play Count will increase by 3.

So what's the point of tracking Play Count data? Surely, someone like an FBI profiler would find this data useful, but the most common use of Play Count data is to create Smart Playlists in iTunes.

But what if a song you loathe and only play as a gag for friends happens to creep into your 'Most Listened To' playlist? Most savvy iTunes users won't need an in-depth tutorial (just right-click and select Reset Play Count), but everyone is a newbie once.

The following tutorial explains how to reset the Play Count of one or more songs in your iTunes library.

Requirements:

    • Any computer with iTunes installed
    • Song(s) that you wish to reset the Play Count of

HOW TO RESET THE PLAY COUNT IN ITUNES

  1. Turn on your computer and open the iTunes application

  2. Click on the Library icon in the Source window

  3. From the Edit menu, select View Options; ( Edit > View Options )

  4. Uncheck all other selection boxes except Artist, Album and Play Count. Then click OK. This will make it easier to see your most played songs at a glance.  You can modify these settings again later.

Step #4: View Options Step #5: Play Count in descending order

  5. Click on the Play Count tab in the main browsing window to sort songs by most played in descending order. The tiny arrow to the right of Play Count should be pointing down.

  6. Select the song or songs you would like to reset the Play Count of and then Right-click (Windows) or Control-click (Mac) to access a contextual menu. Choose Reset Play Count. If you would like to see a screen shot for this step click here.

  7. Confirm that you want to reset the Play Count by clicking on the Yes button. That's it!

Now such guilty pleasures as Sir Mix-A-Lot's "Baby Got Back," Britney Spears' "I'm a Slave 4 U", and Right Said Fred's "I'm Too Sexy" will not show up in your ‘Most Played' Playlist… at least for a few weeks.

RESETTING PLAY COUNT FOR MULTIPLE SONGS

Should your iTunes library contain more than one embarrassing song that requires a Play Count reset, press the Command (Mac) or Control (Windows) key as you click on additional songs.  You can deselect a song by clicking on it again.  To select all the songs in your iTunes library, choose Select All from the Edit menu.

NERD NOTE: In a MethodShop tutorial about the iTunes Registry, we describe how to submit an iTunes Library file to get analyzed and compared to other users.  Resetting the Play Count is quite helpful if only to avoid the embarrassment of revealing your guilty pleasures to everyone on the Internet.

CREATE A SMART PLAYLIST OF YOUR MOST PLAYED SONGS

  1. Launch the iTunes application

  2. Select New Smart Playlist from the File menu ( File > New Smart Playlist ). A window like the image below will appear.

    itunes

To make a playlist of your 100 most played songs, input the following conditions: Limit to 100 songs selected by most often played, Live updating.

  3. Click OK.

  4. A new untitled playlist should appear under your Source window in iTunes. Rename this playlist something like 'My Top 100 Songs' or something to that effect.

That's it. This Smart Playlist is dynamic and will automatically update as you listen to your music and the Play Count increases song by song.
