Spy
Hunter is
definitely one of my all time favorite childhood games. I've played
it numerous times on my old Nintendo and in the arcade. So
as you can imagine, I was pretty happy to find out that Pocket Express
ported this old 1983 Midway arcade game to the Palm OS along with
four other classic arcade games. The Midway
Arcade Classics package contains the following five classic arcade games
for your Palm OS device: Joust, Defender II, Spy Hunter, Sinistar, and
Root Beer Tapper. Spy Hunter is definitely the highlight out of all the
Midway
Arcade Classics but the other games are nice to have too.
All
the games have been optimized to create as authentic an arcade experience
as possible within the confines of your portable device.
Spy
Hunter is kind of a weird premise now that I look back at it.
For some reason, the highways are crawling with driving Spies. Your
mission is to knock the Spies off the road, without killing the innocent
civilians which are all over the highway as well. Your default weapon
is a set of machine guns mounted to the front of your sexy red sports
car. But the occasional special weapons truck can stock you up with
all of the same weapons that you had in the arcade. Just drive up the
ramp into the weapons truck to get everything from oil slicks, smoke
screens, and missiles. Watch out for sneaky enemies, icy roads, and
special detours. You can even turn your car into a boat and race the
waterways to wash out the enemy there, too.
In
Joust, just as in the original, you will take to the
air on your winged bird of prey and defeat opponents with your javelin.
In case you forgot, this is the basic plot of Joust: In the future,
brave knights will climb onto their birds of prey and compete for
the ultimate goal--their lives! The basic premise of Joust is simple.
You just fly around the arena and knock your opponents out of the
sky with your trusty lance. This version of Joust has over 100 levels.
Defender
II lets you use your spaceship and antiballistic weapons to
defend your planet from attacking aliens. Fly your spaceship at dizzying
speeds and use lasers and special weapons to defend the planet and
save the astronauts. You must combat wave after wave of deadly aliens
in order to survive! Fly your spaceship over the planet’s surface in an
attempt to destroy the aliens that are abducting your astronauts. You
are equipped with a laser canon and a limited supply of smart bombs.
These bombs are useful for taking out a large number of enemy ships
on a single screen – without harming any astronauts on the screen.
Aliens will abduct humans, but you can blast the aliens and rescue
the humans with good shooting and fast flying!
Sinistar sets you against the game's
eponymous villain and his merciless hordes. Fly through the asteroid
belt and defeat Sinistar and his evil hordes. Mine planetoids for Sinisite
crystals to use as bombs against Sinistar himself, and keep your lasers
ready to fend off the enemy spaceships!
In
the game Root
Beer Tapper, your goal is to pour frosty mugs of Root Beer
and fling them to your customers without breaking
any mugs. I'm pretty sure in the original arcade version you were
serving Beer not Root Beer. I guess Midway had to make this game
a little more kid friendly. Anyway, the drink orders come faster
and faster, so you’ll
need quick reflexes to keep all your customers happy. Root Beer Tapper
features 4 different types of levels: Cowboy bar, Sports bar, Punk
bar, and Alien bar, Unlimited levels, and a 2-Player mode. You'll
need to perfect your bartending skills as you serve it up for everyone
from cowboys to aliens!
The game
play is fast and bug free for all 5 of these games. It's hard to believe
that these old favorites can
look and play so well on a Palm! A lot of times these
arcade game ports to the Palm sacrifice game speed and crash a lot,
but not the Midway
Arcade Classics. Midway and Pocket Express did a
great job in bringing these games to the Palm.
