Bad Japanese Inventions
The Japanese are Crazy for Chindogu! Are you?
Created: 02/17/1997 Updated: 09/29/2009 Authors: Paul Zau Kim

Making silly inventions is an extremely popular hobby in Japan. They call it Chindogu. These inventions attempt to solve a problem or make a task easier. However, despite their attempts, Chindogu inventions usually just create new problems and cause significant social embarrassment. But that's all part of the fun.

Here are some of our favorite Chindogu inventions. Enjoy!

Butter my toast Mommy! Now Daddy can milk himself.

Blow! Then dazzle your friends as it dangles in your face! Perfect for getting mysterious yellow fluid in your eyes.

Noodle fan? Because all soup should have its own jet stream. Sign Translation: I have no friends.

Michael Jackson could have used one of these to keep his nose from washing away. Pam Anderson could probably use two of these kickstands.

NERD NOTE: Literally translated, "Chindogu" means unusual tool. The term was coined by Kenji Kawakami, a Japanese investor and editor of the magazine "Mail Order Life." Dan Papia then introduced it to the English-speaking world and popularized it as a monthly feature in his magazine, Tokyo Journal, encouraging readers to send in ideas. Kawakami and Papia collaborated on the English language book 101 Unuseless Japanese Inventions: The Art of Chindogu, first edition 1995.

Say hello to Dasubee - The Japanese Elephant Urinal Cleaner. To use Dasubee, just turn him on and back him into a dirty urinal (or maybe it's dirty urinals that turn him on). Dasubee will start scrubbing away and clean up all those urine soaked cigarette butts and that porcelain rim of random pubic hair.

So the next time you are near a urinal in Japan, throw a few peanuts inside and give Dasubee the urinal elephant a treat. Because animal faces and bright colors make cleaning piss fun! ;)

But many of them are still very questionable and a few actually are quite disturbing.
