Here’s a video of the strange and controversial Indian baby dropping ritual. Babies are tossed off of rooftops or other tall structures. One of the most popular locations for the ritual is the Baba Umer Durga, a Muslim shrine near Sholapur. Then bystanders below catch the baby with bedsheets.

Why Are They Doing This?

In rural areas of India, the infant mortality rate is high. As a result, parents turn to superstitious solutions, like the baby dropping ritual. Health and prosperity are supposedly blessed upon the ritual’s participants.


Is The Baby Dropping Ritual Even Legal?

Is baby dropping legal is India? No. But despite multiple attempts by the Indian government to stop the practice, the ritual has continued for over 700 years.
