If you’re happy streetlight and you know it… sway all over the place and freakout English motorists. Apparently, it was a very windy day in the UK. This video is from the M62 motorway show the lampposts swaying so much from the wind that they look like they might snap in half. Let’s hope no one got hurt.
Vortex Shedding: Why The Streetlights Swayed
Why were the lamps swaying? When the natural frequency of a lamp column matches the speed of the wind, it’s called “vortex shedding.” It’s a very rare event and only happens at certain wind speeds.
