Universal Pictures Intl. prexy Peter Smith has been promoted to president of NBC Universal Intl.
Smith, who will remain based in London, will oversee international TV and new-media distribution as well as U’s foreign channels.
He’s also been tasked with ensuring greater coordination among the studio’s foreign divisions, including theatrical distribution and home entertainment.
Smith has run UPI, the overseas video arm, since 2000. His promotion is effective immediately, but he will continue to run UPI for the rest of this year until his successor is appointed.
Smith fills the vacancy left by Frederick Huntsberry, who ankled in July after just two months on the job to join Paramount as chief operating officer.
“Peter is an experienced and talented global executive with strong relationships across the industry,” said Bob Wright, vice chairman of GE and chairman-chief exec of NBC Universal, to whom Smith reports.
