Olé, olé, olé, oléeeeeee. O-lé, o-lé!
Yes, today was a big day — and I’m not talking about a certain new phone finally hitting (or not hitting, as it were) shelves.
I’m talking about a wickedly dramatic, nauseatingly anxiety-inducing, down-to-the-wire US victory over Algeria in an epic World Cup match. Adjectives aside, the game and its final point in the first minute of overtime got a lot of attention. A whole lot. So much so, in fact, that Internet traffic may have hit a record high. From Mashable (via CNN):
“In the minutes following Landon Donovan‘s game winning goal in the 91st minute of action (which sent the US to the round of 16), traffic spiked to 11.2 million visitors per minute, which moved the event past the 2008 presidential election as the second highest traffic day of all-time.”
Now there were 12 million viewers per minute during that first day of the World Cup, but if today’s official numbers exceed the estimated ones, that dramatic goal could spike today to the top of the charts.
