In a somber 15-minute farewell address from the Oval Office, President Joe Biden warned Americans about what he described as a dangerous concentration of power among ultra-wealthy individuals that threatens democracy. “Today, a dangerous concentration of power in the hands of a few extremely wealthy individuals – and the dangerous consequences of their unchecked abuse of power – threatens our entire democracy, our fundamental rights, our freedoms, and the fair chance for everyone to succeed,” Biden said.
Drawing parallels to President Dwight Eisenhower‘s historic 1961 warning about the military-industrial complex, Biden expressed particular concern about what he termed a ‘technological-industrial complex’. He called for specific reforms to curb this concentration of power, including tax code changes, elimination of ‘dark money’ in politics, and limiting Supreme Court justices’ terms to 18 years.
The outgoing president also emphasized the threats posed by artificial intelligence and social media disinformation. “Americans are being overwhelmed with false information and disinformation, which enables the abuse of power,” Biden stated. He called for greater accountability from social media platforms to protect children, families, and democracy.
Despite highlighting his administration’s achievements, including record investments in infrastructure and energy transformation, recent polling indicates only 33% approval for Biden’s presidency. He will hand over power to Donald Trump on Monday, marking what observers note will be a significant transition for the 82-year-old Democrat.
