After years of preparation for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, China graciously hosted thousands of people from around the world. However, not every business in China was ready for the massive influx of English-speaking tourists. Here are a few souvenir photos of funny Engrish signs that we’ll never forget.
NERD NOTE: “Engrish” is a slang term for the unintentional misuse of the English language. The term itself relates to how some languages inadvertently swap the English phonemes “R” and “L” for one another, a process known as lallation.

NERD NOTE: The word “gravid” means pregnant; carrying eggs or young. It’s an uncommon English word and often incorrectly connected with the word gravely, meaning deathly or seriously, as in “she was gravely ill.”

Attending the 2008 Beijing Olympics was an incredible experience for thousands of people from around the world. Although humorous, these English signs show the incredible efforts that many people in China went to make English speakers feel welcome in their country. Americans rarely extend this same courtesy to non-English speakers in our country.
