Microsoft has entered into a groundbreaking 20-year agreement with Constellation Energy to revive the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant in Pennsylvania, which was shuttered in 2019 due to economic challenges. The deal, valued at $1.6 billion, aims to bring the plant’s Unit 1 reactor back online by 2028, generating approximately 835 megawatts of carbon-free electricity.
This strategic move is primarily driven by Microsoft’s growing energy needs for its expanding artificial intelligence (AI) and data center operations. Bobby Hollis, Microsoft’s Vice President of Energy, stated, ‘This agreement is a major milestone in Microsoft’s efforts to help decarbonize the grid in support of our commitment to become carbon negative’. The tech giant aims to power all its global data centers with clean energy by 2025 and achieve carbon negativity by 2030.
The revival of Three Mile Island, which will be renamed the Crane Clean Energy Center, is expected to create 3,400 direct and indirect jobs and contribute significantly to Pennsylvania’s economy. Joe Dominguez, Constellation’s CEO, emphasized, ‘Before it was prematurely shuttered due to poor economics, this plant was among the safest and most reliable nuclear plants on the grid, and we look forward to bringing it back with a new name and a renewed mission to serve as an economic engine for Pennsylvania’.
However, the project faces several challenges, including regulatory approvals from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission and potential opposition from local residents and environmental groups. Critics have raised concerns about the safety of restarting a reactor that has been idle for years, particularly given the site’s history of the 1979 partial meltdown in its Unit 2 reactor.
This deal reflects a broader resurgence of interest in nuclear energy, driven by increasing energy demands, particularly from AI-related technologies, and the push for carbon-free power sources. As AI data centers currently comprise up to 1.5 percent of worldwide electricity use, the nuclear revival is seen as a potential solution to balance technological advancement with environmental goals.
