Have you ever lost your phone before? Did you get it back? If not, this story might make you feel a lot better. A Brooklyn man cleverly used OkCupid to set up a fake date with his iPhone thief and successfully retrieved his stolen iPhone.
iPhone Gets Accidentally Left Inside NYC Taxi Cab
Brooklyn musician Nadav Nirenberg accidentally left his iPhone in a New York City taxi cab on New Year’s Eve. He tried calling his phone number multiple times from a friend’s phone, but his iPhone was already turned off. Whoever picked it up from the taxi obviously knew enough to turn it off right away to disable the location tracking. Apple products are prime targets for thieves and Nirenberg and his phone were the latest victims of an Apple product crime wave called “Apple Picking” by NYC Police.
Brooklyn Man Shows The Internet How To Find A Stolen iPhone Using OkCupid
Nirenberg had given up hope of ever seeing his phone again until he noticed that someone was using his OkCupid.com account. Adding insult to injury, the iPhone thief was actually using Nirenberg’s account to get dates with girls!
Going against advice from authorities, Nirenberg created a fake female profile with a busty photo that he found on the Internet and set up a date with the thief. The thief showed up for the date nicely dressed, smelling of cologne, and carrying a bottle of wine. Nirenberg met the thief on the stairwell, gave him a $20 finder’s fee, and took the phone back. Just in case things didn’t go according to plan, Nirenberg had a hammer hidden behind his back. The thief gave up the phone and ran away carrying his bottle of wine.
Authorities Advise Against Trying To Recover Your Stolen iPhone From Thieves
Although Nirenberg’s story is inspiring to anyone who has lost their phone before, it’s very dangerous. If you don’t want to risk your life, a less risky method of finding your iPhone is to download the free Find My iPhone app from the Apple App Store. However, this app only works if the GPS in the phone hasn’t been disabled. But the Find My iPhone app also allows you to remotely wipe all of your info and prevent people from using your personal accounts to do things like score dates online.
