Shadows Of The Night Was Rejected From A Movie Soundtrack
The song, Shadows Of The Night by Pat Benatar, was originally composed by D.L. Byron for the 1980 film Times Square with Tim Curry. Producers didn’t like the song and ultimately cut it from the soundtrack. In hindsight, this was an extremely poor decision. Nothing helps boost movie ticket sales better than a hit soundtrack. For example, the soundtrack for the movie Top Gun was part of the film’s marketing strategy.
Record Label Executives Thought The Song Wasn’t Commercial Enough
After the Times Square movie producers rejected the song, Byron brought it to his record label. They also rejected it. They claimed that the song “wasn’t commercial enough.” They were terribly wrong. “Shadows In The Night” went on to win Benatar her 3rd Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance (1983) and peaked at both #13 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and #3 on Billboard’s Top Rock Tracks.
The Music Video For Shadows Of The Night By Pat Benatar Features Actors Judge Reinhold and Bill Paxton
Judge Reinhold and Bill Paxton have minor roles in the Shadows Of The Night music video. Both unknowns at the time, Judge Reinhold (Ruthless People, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Gremlins, Beverly Hills Cop) played a World War II fighter pilot and Bill Paxton (The Terminator, Weird Science, Aliens, Predator 2, True Lies, Apollo 13, Twister, Titanic) was a Nazi radio operator. The stylized music video portrays Benatar as a WWII factory riveter who wants to fly a fighter jet and fight Nazis.
Pat Benatar Shadows Of The Night Lyrics
For reference, here are the lyrics for Shadows Of The Night by Pat Benatar below. The song starts with the chorus and then goes into the first verse.
We’re running with the shadows of the night
So baby take my hand, you’ll be all right
Surrender all your dreams to me tonight
They’ll come true in the end
You said, oh girl, it’s a cold world
When you keep it all to yourself
I said, you can’t hide on the inside
All the pain you’ve ever felt
Ransom my heart, but baby don’t look back
‘Cause we got nobody else
We’re running with the shadows of the night
So baby take my hand, it’ll be all right
Surrender all your dreams to me tonight
They’ll come true in the end
You know that sometimes, it feels like
It’s all moving way too fast
Use every alibi and words you deny
That love ain’t meant to last
You can cry tough baby, it’s all right
You can let me down easy, but not tonight
We’re running with the shadows of the night
So baby take my hand, it’ll be all right
Surrender all your dreams to me tonight
They’ll come true in the end
We’re running with the shadows of the night
So baby take my hand, it’ll be all right
Surrender all your dreams to me tonight
They’ll come true in the end
And now the hands of time are standin’ still
Midnight angel, won’t you say you will
We’re running with the shadows of the night
So baby take my hand, it’ll be all right
Surrender all your dreams to me tonight
They’ll come true in the end
We’re running with the shadows of the night
So baby take my hand, it’ll be all right
Surrender all your dreams to me tonight
They’ll come true in the end
We’re running with the shadows of the night
So baby take my hand, it’ll be all right
Surrender all your dreams to me tonight
