Brace yourself Wall Street! On November 12, 2013, the first “non-human” will ring the NASDAQ closing bell. No this isn’t another case of humans losing their jobs to computers, but the launch of a new robotics stock index called ROBO-STOX™. ROBO-STOX will be the first index to benchmark values connected to the robotics and automation technology industries.
UR5 Robot Rings The NASDAQ Closing Bell
The physical arm that will be ringing the bell is a UR5 robot arm from Universal Robots. In order to grab the NASDAQ bell, the 40-pound UR5 robot was given a special three-fingered SDH gripper from Schunk, a German company which makes clamping technology.
Wait a second. Robots on Wall Street? Wasn’t this how Judgement Day began in the movie Terminator 2? If Universal Robots decides to change their name to Skynet, then please let us know in the comments below.
