“Beverly Hills Cop 4” Brings Back Eddie Murphy and Original Stars After 30 Years

Get ready to hear that iconic “Axel F” synth theme again – Eddie Murphy is back as Axel Foley in Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, and Netflix has finally given us a first look. Dropping 30 years after Beverly Hills Cop III back in 1994, the fourth film in this buddy cop franchise promises all the explosive action, fish-out-of-water laughs, and 1980s nostalgia we’ve been waiting for.

The newly released trailer for Axel Fopens with those first familiar keyboard tones as we see Axel speeding through the streets of Detroit in his trademark beat up Chevy Nova. After getting chewed out by his boss for his usual rule-breaking antics, Axel tells him “You know you need me” – and we can’t help but agree. Eddie Murphy simply is Axel Foley, and it’s great to see him back cracking jokes and kicking butt as the street smart Detroit cop making waves in high society Beverly Hills. Only this time, he’s got two new big name co-stars along for the ride.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt shows up as Axel’s quick-witted partner looking to earn his badge, while Kevin Bacon plays the Beverly Hills police chief doubting Axel’s unorthodox methods. But as Axel puts it, “I’m like the fly that spoils the soup – that’s why they call me.” Along with fresh faces, we also get the return of Judge Reinhold as the affable Detective Billy Rosewood and John Ashton as the perpetually annoyed Sgt. Taggart, who don’t look like they’ve aged a day. The gang is getting back together, and we can already envision the inevitable banter and buddy cop antics.

Beverly Hills Cop 4 Plot

As for the plot, Axel returns to Beverly Hills to investigate a string of high-profile robberies, putting him on a collision course with Bacon’s skeptical police chief. The trailer shows the wise-cracking, street smart Axel clashing with Beverly Hills elite and high society as per usual in splashy action set pieces involving car chases, explosions, shootouts, and Axel performing some death-defying feats hanging off high rise buildings. In other words, all the elements that made the original Beverly Hills Cop trilogy such a blast.

And director Mark Molloy ensures everything looks slick, high-octane, and modern for 2023 while keeping the signature Beverly Hills Cop flavor that was such a hit with audiences in the 1980s. As Eddie Murphy told People, “It’s a really physical movie and I had to do some physical stuff. I like to be on the couch…I don’t like jumping over and shooting and running. And I had to do some jumping and shooting and running.” So even though it’s been 30 years, Eddie Murphy is clearly giving this new Axel F outing his all with the same intensity and comedic energy that shot him to stardom in the 1980s.

Why Did It Take So Long To Make A Beverly Hills Cop Sequel?

The beginnings of Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F stretch back over fifteen years mired in development hell, false starts, and scripts getting bounced around. But once Netflix greenlit the project and got Eddie Murphy on board, things finally kicked into high gear. Franchise producer Jerry Bruckheimer returned to oversee the production, aiming to recapture the flavor of the original 1984 film that made Eddie Murphy a global phenomenon. And that meant getting as much of the original gang back together as possible.

In addition to Judge Reinhold and John Ashton, Bronson Pinchot returns from the first Beverly Hills Cop to reprise his role as Serge, the eccentric art gallery owner who aids Axel in his investigations. Paul Reiser also joins the sequel cast after co-starring with Eddie Murphy in last year’s Amazon Prime Video release The Comeback Trail. Relative newcomer Taylour Paige plays Axel’s estranged daughter, getting dragged along for the ride in her dad’s return to Beverly Hills mayhem. All we can say is – the more Beverly Hills Cop OG stars making an appearance, the better!

From the trailer, Mark Molloy nails the slick action and situational humor that made the original Beverly Hills Cop trilogy such a blast. And the prospect of Eddie Murphy clashing and ultimately teaming up with the likes of Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Kevin Bacon will take the franchise chemistry to entertaining new heights. Of course, the highlight is simply seeing Eddie Murphy back in the role that cemented him as a Hollywood A-lister charismatically quipping his way through danger like he never left.

Axel Foley Is Back!

Based on the Axel F trailer, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F looks primed to revive the franchise for old fans and new audiences alike when it hits Netflix next summer. And you can bet we’ll have that iconic “Axel F” theme song stuck in our heads until then.
