Having problems hearing the audio in your AVI files on Mac OS X? You are not alone. After a lot of troubleshooting, I was able to fix my AVI no audio problem on Mac. Here’s what I did.
I Know The Audio Is There But It’s Not Playing
I recently purchased a Cisco FlipVideo camera. It’s awesome. Records 1 hour worth of digital video on a device smaller than most cell phones. However, after I transferred the AVI videos from the FlipVideo to my Mac, they didn’t have any audio. I watched a few of the videos on the camera so I knew the audio was there. I also uploaded one of the videos titled “The Worm Pool” to a video sharing site and the audio was fine. What’s going on?
AVI Files Have No Audio On Mac
Playing back Microsoft Windows video and audio files on your Mac can be a little problematic. If you want to playback AVI and WMV files using Quicktime that contain MP2, MPEG1, then you need to install some extra software.
- Flip4Mac: With the Windows Media Components for QuickTime by Flip4Mac, you can play Windows Media files (.wma and .wmv) in QuickTime Player and view Windows Media content on the Internet using a web browser. flip4mac.com
- Perian: Perian is a free, open-source QuickTime component that adds native support for many popular video formats. perian.org
- A52 Codec: A CoreAudio component that can decode stereo and 5.1 surround sound from A52 and AC-3 audio. This type of audio is often found in DVD movies. Note: this is distributed with Perian 1.0. If you have already installed Perian 1.0, there is no need to download this update; you should already have it. versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/27300
AVI No Audio Mac – Problem Solved!
After you install this extra software, then all those movies that played with no sound in QuickTime should now work. I used to have to play these files with VLC (which is great for some file formats) but now you have the option with Quicktime too and they’ll play in Front Row. Your AVI experience going from Windows to Mac should be complete.
