Here’s a video of the strange and controversial Indian baby dropping ritual. Babies are tossed off of rooftops or other tall structures. One of the most popular locations for the ritual is the Baba Umer Dargah, a Muslim shrine near Sholapur. Then bystanders below catch the baby with bedsheets.

In rural areas of India, the infant mortality rate is high. As a result, parents turn to superstitious solutions, like the baby dropping ritual, for help. Health and prosperity are supposedly blessed upon the ritual’s participants.
