Garmin has finally offered Mac OS X support to users with USB GPS Devices that wish to update their units. The Mac OS X application is called WebUpdater. I was able to plug in my GPS 60CS and for the first time since owning it (3 years), my mac recognized it.
I had tried using the Mac OS X application Parallels to connect my GPS to my mac before Garmin released WebUpdater, but I learned that the 60CS is not supported under Parallels. Therefore, I was at the mercy of Garmin. After they delayed their promised 2006 release of OS X support, I didn’t know if I would ever see it…
Although I am happy to see this progress, I am still anxiously waiting for an OS X supported MapSource app that will allow me to install maps using my Mac. Without it, all I have is a GPS that is able to be updated, but not used effectively.
