TL;DR:
- Google Bard can now generate photorealistic images from text descriptions in English
- Images showcase accuracy in faces, hands, and creative details
- Google Bard images feature helps close gap between Bard and leading AI chatbots, like ChatGPT
For months, Google has been playing catch-up. Its AI rivals, like OpenAI‘s ChatGPT and Microsoft‘s Bing attracted users with hot new features like conversational search and image generation powered by the latest machine learning. But with its mighty resources, it seemed only a matter of time before Google brought some magic of its own to the AI race.
It looks like that day has arrived. The Google chatbot, Google Bard, can now generate images from text prompts. Although OpenAI has its DALL-E AI image generator tool, the company has yet to integrate it into ChatGPT.
Announced in a Google blog post, the new image creation capability comes as part of several updates for Google’s chatbot Bard.
For an extra creative boost, you can now generate images in Bard in English in most countries around the world, at no cost. This new capability is powered by our updated Imagen 2 model, which is designed to balance quality and speed, delivering high-quality, photorealistic outputs. Just type in a description — like “create an image of a dog riding a surfboard” — and Bard will generate custom, wide-ranging visuals to help bring your idea to life.
.
Thanks to Google’s new Imagen 2 model that balances quality and speed, Bard can take a text description like “cat driving a race car” and generate a custom photorealistic image visualizing it.
Early Google Bard Images Samples Show Impressive Results
While my brief test of the new Google Bard image generator only involved some quick tests, Google shared more impressive samples like vivid nature scenes, playful animal manipulations, and even video game characters brought to life. The images showcase Bard’s knack for details like realistic faces and hands that often trip up AI image generators.
Responsibility And AI Safeguards
As with any new AI capability, responsibility is critical. Google says Imagen 2 relies on technically vetted training data and incorporates automatic filters to avoid generating harmful, explicit or offensive images. The system also digitally watermarks images using SynthID to distinguish them from original human creations. It’s refreshing to see Google making safety and ethics core principles in its AI development.
