While we all know director Tim Burton‘s work today, back in 1985, he had only directed a few short films. Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure was his first big feature film. Tim Burton, actor Paul Reubens (aka Pee-Wee Herman) and the rest of the cast and crew did a great job. Decades later, people young and old are still sharing Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure quotes.
Whether you’ve just seen it for the first time or it’s been a while since you’ve watched it, we want you to take a walk down memory lane. Keep reading while we share our favorite Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure quotes.
“Be Sure And Tell ’em Large Marge Sent Ya!”
If you were a kid in the 1980s, seeing Large Marge up on the screen probably still sends shivers up and down your spine. Especially when she utters the memorable line, “be sure and tell ’em Large Marge sent ya” only to find out she had died 10 years earlier!
She was based on the story in “Phantom 309” which was by country songwriter/singer Red Sovine. And to make things even scarier, the entire time Large Marge shared her story, she never once blinked.
“Deep In The Heart of Texas”
To set the scene, Pee-Wee calls Dottie on the phone. Dottie asks Pee-Wee where he is and he responds that he’s in Texas.
When Dottie says, “huh?” Pee-Wee decides to prove it by shouting/singing, “the stars at night, are big and bright”. At that point, the Texans around him immediately began clapping in unison and shouting, “deep in the heart of Texas.”
While this doesn’t actually work in real life, it is funny and memorable.
“Knitting And Knitting And Knitting And…”
Pee-Wee tries to explain that feeling we all experience when something never seems to end by using this as the ultimate metaphor:
- “It’s like you’re trying to unravel a giant cable-knit sweater and someone keeps knitting and knitting and knitting and knitting and knitting and knitting and knitting and knitting and knitting…”
“That’s My Name, Don’t Wear It Out!”
This Pee-Wee Herman line became an oft-quoted one during the 80s. When someone said his name, Pee-Wee would respond:
- “That’s my name, don’t wear it out!”
In fact, Paul Reubens wanted everyone to identify him as Pee-Wee rather than Paul to make Pee-Wee seem like a real person. When he appears as Pee-Wee Herman, the credits list him as “Pee-Wee Herman as Himself.”
“Do You Have Any Dreams?”
The best part about Pee-Wee is how silly he is. He reminds us all that we are still kids, even after we’ve grown up. When Simone asks, “Do you have any dreams?” Pee-Wee responds:
- “Yeah, I’m all alone. I’m rolling a big doughnut and this snake wearing a vest…” Not exactly the answer Simone was looking for, but it still makes us laugh 30 years later.
“Why Don’t You Take A Picture? It Will Last Longer!”
As Americans continue to spend way too much time uploading photos of their food and other activities onto social media, this quote seems just as relevant today as it did in 1985.
- “Why don’t you take a picture? It will last longer!”
