The story behind Limbic Software‘s Zombie Gunship is simple. Zombies have taken over the earth and both humans and zombies are trying to enter the shelter in Cheyenne Mountain. You are a gunner on a AC-130 Gunship and are tasked with holding off the zombie swarms so the last of humanity can safely get inside the base. And, wow, it couldn’t be more fun.
As the gunner, you scan the barren landscape below and hunt black zombies silhouettes that appear on your radar. The humans appear as white glowing silhouettes. Limbic Software has also recently updated the game to work on the iPad. The bigger screen will definitely help with your zombie hunting.
Which each zombie you kill or human that successfully reaches the bunker, you earn points which can be traded in for weapons and equipment upgrades in between rounds.
The round will end for one of two reasons:
- If you accidentally kill 3 humans. So aim carefully while blowing up zombies near humans.
- A zombie reaches the entrance. If just one zombie enters the bunker, then the bunker will seal itself to avoid a breach.
Fun Factor
If you’ve ever seen a Pentagon briefing where they show gun/bomb camera footage of terrorists getting vaporized or played any of the AC-130 Call of Duty levels then you know exactly what to expect. But adding Zombies to the mix just makes it so much more fun. Gun camera footage + zombies = brilliant!
Sound Effects
One of the things that really impressed us was the sound effects. It’s a small detail that the average person might not notice, but each weapon has it’s own distinct sound and thud when it hits the ground. Very realistic.
App Store Success
Zombie Gunship has really struck a chord with iPhone gamers. The game has consistently been in the top 10 in the iTunes Store and is giving app powerhouses like Angry Birds and Cut The Rope some solid competition.
The Bad News
WTF – there’s only three guns and one level!? Zombie Gunship definitely needs more maps, more weapons, more zombies and more extras. After playing the game for a week, we’ve already maxed out all of our weapons. We’re still earning money in the game but can’t buy anything else.
Final Thoughts
Zombie Gunship only costs $0.99 and it’s tons of fun. Buy it and cross your fingers that Limbic Software has some updates on their way with some new stuff.
