Poor Bill Gates. Despite suffering through an embarrassing computer crash, nicknamed a Blue Screen Of Death (BSOD), Bill Gates promised that Microsoft would help consumers stay plugged into technology. The BSOD error happened during his high-profile 2005 keynote speech at the Consumer Electronics Show.

In his 7th annual keynote speech at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES), Microsoft’s chairman explained that the proliferation of high-speed Internet access and the falling price of data storage are compelling people to put music, photos, movies and other aspects of their life into a digital format.
The embarrassing BSOD prompted jokes and guffaws, but Gates makes a compelling argument. In the next decade, it’s very likely that consumers will store most of their digital media in cloud storage and not locally on their computers.
