The birth of ‘SNL’ delivered on DVD

The birth of 'SNL' delivered on DVD 1Dan Aykroyd remembers his thoughts moments before he went on stage for the first time in 1975 on Saturday Night Live.

“I remember standing under the scaffolding, thinking these next five minutes are going to be experience- and existence-altering, because if I die out there, this is basically my one shot at coming down to the States and being an occupying force in American show business,” says Aykroyd, who initially was hired as a writer.

Thirty-one years later, the first show and the other 23 episodes of the first season are out on DVD today in a $70, eight-disc set from Universal.

Aykroyd need not have worried. His first appearance in the live comedy show was a sketch with Garrett Morris in which they played home security experts breaking into a house. People laughed.
