Elon Musk has revolutionized everything from electric cars to space travel. And his various accomplishments have earned him countless accolades. His global fandom is so intense that our daily LinkedIn feeds are frequently populated with inspirational Elon Musk quotes from young entrepreneurs. But lately, the thinned-skinned entrepreneur seems to have more in common with(Amazon link) Dr. Evil than(Amazon link) Tony Stark.

Here’s why I think the Elon Musk Twitter takeover deal is both a PR stunt and a solution for Musk to censor critical comments about himself.

Was Elon Musk Dumped For Chelsea Manning?

In his effort to reverse birthrate declines and father potential Mars colonists here on Earth, Musk is leaving a trail of broken homes and children with an absent father. In 2021 alone, Musk is believed to have fathered four children with three different women. But the aftermath of one of those relationships might be behind Musk’s motivation to purchase Twitter.

Musk has two children with Canadian musician, Grimes. The youngest was born in December 2021. Just three months after the birth of their baby, on March 10, 2022, Grimes broke the news on Twitter that she and Musk had broken up.

Then on the very next day, March 11th, PageSix revealed that Grimes was already in a relationship with the trans woman whistleblower, Chelsea Manning. 

What a second… a trans woman?! Was the real reason behind the Elon Musk Grimes split because she left him for a trans woman?! Even with Grimes’ unique personality, it’s an interesting relationship rebound choice, especially after dating the world’s richest man.

But the timing of the birth of the baby, breakup with Musk, and revelation that Grimes was dating and living with Chelsea Manning, is highly unusual. We don’t know for certain, but it’s likely that Grimes and Chelsea Manning’s relationship had some overlap with her relationship with Musk.

That’s a lot of major changes to happen within just a three-month window. And breakups are always easier when you have someone else to move on with. Regardless of who dumped who, Grimes left her relationship with Musk while she was already dating someone else.

The world’s richest man’s girlfriend just left him for Chelsea Manning, a trans activist. The news rang out like a dinner bell for Internet trolls around the world. Fresh meat was on the menu.

Twitter Users Troll Musk Because His Ex-Girlfriend Rebounded With A Transsexual

In an instant, the tables were turned on Musk. After news broke that Grimes and Manning were dating in March 2022, Twitter users took to the platform to absolutely troll Musk.

Not everyone is fluid with their sexuality and comfortable mixing and matching the gender of their dating partners. Especially not Musk. He’s an egomaniac on a quest to personally repopulate the Earth with every woman in his orbit. So how do you think he felt about Grimes dating Chelsea Manning?

I can almost smell Musk’s ego burning in a fire of rage just thinking about it. Every trolling tweet just adds more fuel to the fire.

For example, some users implied that Musk was also a trans woman with fake breaking news headlines saying that he changed his name to “Elona Musk”.

Other users attacked his transphobia and theorized how “shook” Musk must be knowing that his ex-girlfriend dated a trans woman.

And the trolls didn’t give up. Four months later, in July 2022, everything Musk was posting on Twitter was still being attacked by his former conservative fan base.

Musk’s support for Florida Governor DeSantis was trolled with references to Chelsea Manning.

And his criticism of former President Donald Trump was trolled with comments like, “You are just mad your ex is with a trans woman so you went hard alt right back to your roots”.

Why The Elon Musk Twitter Takeover Timeline Is So Suspicious

Knowing that Musk’s offer to purchase Twitter was made while he was being trolled for Grimes’ new relationship with Chelsea Manning, the timing around the offer is highly questionable. Does the thinned-skinned tech CEO have a hidden agenda?

Let’s examine the timeline of events:

• March 10, 2022: The Elon Musk Grimes split is announced on Twitter by Grimes
• March 11, 2022: PageSix breaks the news that Grimes and Chelsea Manning are dating.
• March 11+, 2022: Musk is regularly trolled on Twitter because Grimes dated a trans woman
• April 4, 2022: After a few weeks of getting trolled on Twitter about the relationship, Musk reveals that he recently purchased 9% of Twitter for $2.64 billion.
• April 14, 2022: The Elon Musk Twitter takeover deal is announced. He makes an unsolicited offer to acquire Twitter for $43 billion with the intention to take the company private. Musk claims his motivation for the offer is to protect free speech on the platform.
• April 20, 2022: Elon Musk secures the required funding to complete his purchase of Twitter.

The timeline of the Elon Musk Twitter takeover offer is fishy. Musk’s interest in Twitter appears to be very reactionary to the criticism aimed at him in the wake of Grimes’ relationship with Chelsea Manning being revealed. But strategically, it made sense. In an instant, Musk’s offer to buy Twitter killed two birds with one stone. He created a news story bigger than his ex-girlfriend dating a trans woman, and owning Twitter would give himself censorship control on the platform.

Does Elon Musk Want To Own Twitter Just So He Can Censor Negative Comments About Himself?

Despite being a self-proclaimed “free speech absolutist” that wants to free Twitter, ironically, it’s Musk who might fear free speech the most. His bid to buy Twitter might just be his attempt to silence news about him and ban his trolls. 

Through the actions of both him and his companies, Elon Musk has proven time and time again that he is very much against free speech and better labeled a free speech hypocrite than a free speech absolutist.

Were Twitter’s Content Moderation Efforts Really That Bad?

One of the biggest worries among Twitter users, is having a free speech hypocrite in charge of the platform. In response to the Twitter community’s continued concern with Musk’s ownership of the social network, Musk tweeted: “The extreme antibody reaction from those who fear free speech says it all.”

But does Twitter actually block free speech? Twitter has a policy against malicious behavior, which includes “causing harm to people or property.”

To help make the platform a safer place, Twitter stopped accepting political ads, censored COVID-19 and election misinformation, started labeling manipulated media and deepfakes, and banned foreign accounts promoting propaganda. Repeated violations could result in an account being banned, such as what happened with former President Donald Trump’s account.

Twitter without guardrails means hate groups, propagandists, hackers, scammers, extremists, foreign militaries, and more can now use the platform unrestricted. That’s pretty scary.

And just a reminder, Twitter does not fall under the US Constitution’s First Amendment.

The First Amendment protects U.S. Citizens from government censorship (“Congress shall make no law… abridging the freedom of speech”). The First Amendment does not apply to private platforms, like Twitter. No one has a legal right to tweet. When a Twitter user can’t share fake medical info, like false advice that drinking bleach cures COVID, that’s a good thing, right?

Will Twitter Lose Its Spark With A Free Speech Hypocrite In Charge?

After Twitter users expressed their disdain at the idea of Musk purchasing the social media platform, Musk tweeted, “The extreme antibody reaction from those who fear free speech says it all.”

However, what Musk fails to realize is that the upset Twitter users don’t “fear” free speech, they fear the reality of having a free speech hypocrite in charge of the social network.

• Will Musk abuse his ownership by censoring bad press about him or his companies, like the censorship effort that Tesla orchestrated with the Chinese government?
• If a Twitter user makes a negative comment about Musk, will they be met with the same aggressive bullying tactics he’s used in the past to censor critics?
• Will media organizations have their accounts penalized if they publish unfavorable stories about Musk or his companies? Will Musk continue his censorship efforts of the press?

The Terrible Timing Of The Elon Musk Twitter Takeover Deal

But even the world’s richest man can’t control the global economy.

Something happened during Elon Musk’s quest to buy Twitter and censor his critics… the stock market crashed. Musk initially offered $54.20 per share (the $4.20 is a marijuana joke) to buy the social media company in April 2022. But in the months that followed, Twitter stock dropped as low as $32.65.

• April 20, 2022: Elon Musk secures the required funding to complete his purchase of Twitter.
• May 2022: The stock market begins to show signs of decline.
• June 14, 2022: After weeks of consistent declines, the US stock market enters Bear territory.
• July 8, 2022: Musk backs out of his deal to buy Twitter.
• July 12, 2022: Twitter sues Elon Musk for trying to back out of his deal to buy the company.

Purchasing Twitter below his initial purchase offer would put Musk billions of dollars in debt before his first day on the job.

Elon Musk’s Legacy: A Lovable Tech Icon Turned Conservative Troll

Even if the Elon Musk Twitter takeover never goes through, he at least succeeded in shifting the news media’s focus. Instead of writing articles with transsexual headlines, their attention is on the drama around the Twitter acquisition. It might be one of the most expensive PR distractions of all time, but was it worth it?

The press might have moved away from writing about Grimes and Chelsea Manning, but the Twitter trolls haven’t. They still reply to everything Musk tweets with snarky and hateful trans woman comments.

Without owning Twitter, Musk doesn’t have a censorship solution for this problem. And unfortunately for Musk, his Twitter trolls are partly of his own creation.

Over the years, Musk has slowly exposed himself to be an anti-free speech and thinned-skinned troll. These days, Musk has devolved into a low-class shitposter on Twitter. The Twitter trolls idolize him. Musk’s attitude on Twitter emboldens and inspires trolls.

The world’s richest man is not above comparing world leaders to Hitler, openly supporting right-wing organizations, or even making stupid boob jokes. 

In one example, Musk tweeted “Am thinking of starting a new university: Texas Institute of Technology & Science”. Just in case everyone didn’t notice that the school’s acronym would be TITS, Musk followed up saying that the University would have “epic merch.” Weeks later Tesla was hit with a lawsuit claiming that sexual harassment is rampant at the company.

It’s a sad legacy that Musk is creating for himself. Instead of helping to use his wealth and influence to help build a better life on Earth, he’s prepared to burn it all down as he exits for Mars. But what happens if he doesn’t leave? What if he fails at his quest for Mars? He’ll be stuck among the flames that he created like the rest of us.
