iPod is a line of portable media players developer by Apple Computer and launched in 2001. Originally an “mp3 player” (which was also capable of playing other compressed music formats, such as AAC), the iPod soon became the dominant player in the portable media space, gaining a majority market share with immense pop cultural relevance. While the first iPod models had low-resolution monochrome screens and hard disk drives (as well as the trademark scroll-wheel), the current line-up spans media players with full-color screens capable of displaying video to flash memory-based models with no screen and simplified controls. The iPod has become a foundational product for the once-troubled Apple; it was followed by the “iPhone,” a device that combines the media-playing capabilities of the iPod with the mobile computing and communications capabilities of a smartphone, in June 2007.
