What’s the most shocking thing you’ve ever bitten into? For Sue Calhoun of Brownsboro, Texas, that question has an easy answer after taking a road trip bite of her go-to candy bar combo. As Calhoun chomped into her Milky Way candy bar, she encountered something tougher than caramel or nougat. Stunned, she pulled from her mouth a full tooth—silver filling and all—baked right into the sweet treat.
“I took one bite and it was fine, so I took another bite and bit down on something and thought, ‘Well, it may be a peanut,'” Calhoun recalled.
Understandably disgusted, Calhoun grew nauseated thinking about the tooth’s origins. Had the tooth come from a factory worker? Gross!
She needed to get to the root of the matter. After phoning Milky Way’s maker Mars Candy, Calhoun was asked by the company to return the contaminated candy and tooth for inspection.
Calhoun was skeptical she would ever see the tooth again, so she considered other options: “What I think I’ll do is have my little dentist down here in Brownsboro… examine the tooth and see if it was a jaw tooth,” she told KLTV.
Even without the tooth to examine, the candy manufacturer sent Calhoun some coupons for free candy bars.
For now, the tooth’s past remains a mystery. But its future is settled — Calhoun confirmed she won’t be mailing back her gross discovery or Mars Candy’s offered coupons. After the tooth incident, she understandably lost her sweet tooth, joking the situation makes her “sick” to her stomach.
“Every time I think about it, I kind of get sick to my stomach because I don’t know what kind of mouth it come out of,” said Calhoun.
Mars Candy responded firmly about their strict safety standards, concluding “no conclusion has been reached at this time” regarding the tooth’s origins. But their statement provided little comfort for Calhoun, who was left with a lingering bad taste over the incident.
