Twisted Metal 2 Cheat Codes & Game Review

Welcome to a twisted world where the drivers are insane, the explosions apocalyptic and the weapons are hardcore. The Twisted Metal series is the ultimate automobile combat simulation for the PlayStation. Although the Twisted Metal series produced several sequels, Twisted Metal 2 is considered to be the best by many experienced gamers.

My college roommates and I used to play this game in the mid-to-late 1990s after coming home from the bars until the wee hours of the morning. Sure we had a bunch of other fun “drunk friendly” games, like Tekken 2 and Cool Boarders 2, but Twisted Metal 2 was our favorite. There was just something about the dark nature of the game that kept us glued to the TV set. Getting in cars and attempting to destroy our opponents in exotic locations like New York or Paris was just so much fun. Twisted Metal 2 instantly became one of my favorite games of all time.

In concept, Twisted Metal 2 is a demolition derby that permits the usage of ballistic projectiles. Players choose a vehicle and an arena to engage in battle with opposing drivers. A variety of weapons and upgrades are obtainable by pick-ups scattered throughout the stage. The last driver alive is the winner.

For some reason, the subsequent titles in this series like Twisted Metal 3 and(Amazon link) Twisted Metal Black never quite lived up to the all-around fun of Twisted Metal 2. It’s a classic title that every PlayStation owner should have in their collection.

If you already own Twisted Metal 2, then dust it off and try some of these cheat codes. It might help breathe some new life into a great classic game. If you’ve never played Twisted Metal 2… seriously, what’s wrong with you? Buy it now.

• Unlock Sweet Tooth: Press Up, L1, Triangle, Right at the vehicle selection screen. You will hear the sound of an explosion if you have entered the code correctly. The stage password will not be accessible with this code. This code is actually visible in the game. Begin gameplay in New York City and go by the pool. There are red lights that spell out the code on the side that has the portal (not in the glass). Go off the edge to see it.
• Unlock Minion: Press L1, Up, Down, Left at the vehicle selection screen. The stage password will not be accessible with this code.
• Stronger Axel Shock Wave: Select Axel as a character. Hold R2 and rapidly push Up, Down, Left, Right(2), Left, Down, Up while playing the game. Run into one of the other vehicles to do massive damage.
• Axel Power Hit: Select Axel as a character. Hold R1 and rapidly push Up, Down, Left, Right(2), Left, Down, Up while playing the game. Run into one of the other vehicles to do massive damage.
• Homing napalm: Accumulate at least two napalms. Fire a napalm blast, keep the button held, and press Up, Down(2), Left(3), Right(2). Extra napalms shots will appear in your inventory to confirm correct code entry. Any napalms collected will act as homing napalms when fired and track their intended target.
• Unlimited weapons: Hold R2 + L2 and rapidly push Up, Down, Left, Right(2), Left, Down, Up. while playing the game. You will hear the sound of a text message if you have entered the code correctly.
• Mega guns: Hold R2 and rapidly push Up, Down, Left, Right(2), Left, Down, Up while playing the game in two-player co-operative tournament mode. You will hear the sound of a text message if you have entered the code correctly.
• Shoot’em, lose’em: Hold R2 + L2 and rapidly push Up, Down, Left, Right(2), Left, Down, Up. while playing the game. Wait a few seconds, then repeat the code again. You will hear the sound of a text message if you have entered the code correctly. REMEMBER: This code disables unlimited ammunition.
• God mode: Hold L1 + R1 + L2 + R2 and rapidly push Up, Down, Left, Right(2), Left, Down, Up while playing the game for eternal life (invincibility) and unlimited weapons. You will hear the sound of a text message if you have entered the code correctly.
• Trade weapons for health: Press Down, Up, Right, Left, Up(2), Down(2) while playing the game. All weapons will be converted to health. REMEMBER: Your Advanced Attack bar must be full.
• Random vehicle: Press R1 at the vehicle selection screen.
• Weapon list: Press Select + Down to select weapons from a list instead of a group of icons. You will hear a loud noise if you have entered the code correctly
• Rearview mirror: Press Select + Right while playing the game.
• Disable radar: Press Select + Left while playing the game.
• Select view: Hold Up and press Select while playing the game in one player mode to switch to a helicopter and an overhead view. In two-player mode, this will select how the screen is split.
• Bonus audio: Play track two of the game disc in an audio CD player to hear music from the game.

NERD NOTE: A character named Calypso is the host of the vehicular combat tournament called Twisted Metal. He promises to grant the winner of the tournament one wish. There is a general “be careful what you wish for” theme, as many of the contestants wind up with not-so-happy endings.

Twisted Metal 2 Secret Level Tricks

Here are some secret level tricks that can give you an extra edge during gameplay.

• Shadow’s Special Bonus Damage: If you detonate the ‘shadow’ on a slope, it will do increased damage.
• Easy Kills in Hong Kong: In Hong Kong at the docks, there are high fences with water behind them. Move against the fence at ground level. When a car approaches, move two car-lengths up and plant a mine. If you do it right, your opponent will fly over your head and fall into the water. He or she will instantly set on fire and be fried within seconds!
• Jump the Fence in Los Angeles: Get on top of the tunnel without the teleporter on it. Enter the God Mode code, then face the other tunnel and place a remote bomb at the edge of the tunnel. Now line up your car with the center of the long wooden panel on the near end of the other tunnel. Back up a little, detonate the bomb and hit your turbos fast. If you did this trick right you’ll jump the fence!
• Subway Ride: You can recharge your health and specials with this trick. In Hong Kong, enter the subway tracks, then jump on the train and stay there. When you go up through an archway you should hear a bang and see the message “Free Train Ride” at the top of the screen.
• Blow up the Hollywood Sign: When you start on the first stage drive down on the road and when you see the Hollywood sign on the mountain shoot a couple of missiles at it until the words blow up!
• Blow up the Bridges in Moscow: In Moscow, place and detonate a Remote in the very middle of the arena on the purple and green pad. The four bridges will blow-up and weapons will appear after the bridges have disappeared.
• Destroy the “Lightning Tazer” in Moscow: In Moscow, you can destroy the “Lightning Tazer.” All that you have to do is use a Napalm to shoot it as you jump from one bridge across to the other.
• Blow up the Eiffel Tower: In Paris, lay a remote bomb on top of the Eiffel Tower. When you blow it up, it will fall over from a bridge to the rooftops. For best results, wait for someone to enter the tower before triggering the remote. If your timing is right they’ll lose half their life!
• New look for the Statue of Liberty: On the New York level find the Statue Of Liberty and shoot a missile at her. An explosion will occur, and she will become a blond in a swimsuit. Shoot a second missile at her, and she will become deformed and blow up.
• Extra Energy: You can gain extra energy on any level where you can run over people. To do so, just run over 10 of the unfortunate victims.
• Defeating Dark Tooth: 
  • Make sure you have at least 10 remotes, it might be hard to kill the other bosses without remotes, but it’s worth it. Next freeze Dark Tooth, and get next to him but make sure he is frozen, then put on your shield, get your remotes and blow him up. It should take him out instantly. Normally it would take a while to blow all the remotes up, but with this code, it takes 3 seconds to blow them all.
  • Here’s another method: In the last level, quickly race to a subway that should be straight ahead of you. Once you get there, there should be a wall behind you and an opening in front of you. Dark Tooth will not come back the alley, but he will shoot at you every once in a while. Just keep using your weapons until he is dead. An easy way to wear him down is to first freeze him then use napalm.
