The controversial snack choice took place at New York City’s Madison Square Garden on November 4th. During a slow instrumental part of a song, The 1975’s frontman Matty Healy pulled out a slab of raw meat, got on his knees, and started eating it on stage.
Shirtless, he then began fondling himself shocking the audience filled with large groups of younger teens and their parents.

Matthew Healy’s bizarre on-stage behavior is nothing new for fans of The 1975. They are all too familiar with his onstage antics. But even Healy’s mother, actress and author Denise Welch, tweeted that she was shocked with what she saw him do onstage.
“I saw it too,” she wrote with three cry-laughing emojis in response to Rolling Stone reporter CT Jones who tweeted: “There is no way I could possibly explain to my 18-year-old self that I just watched Matty Healy grope himself onstage and eat a raw steak before crawling into a television.”
Why Did Matt Healy Eat Raw Meat Onstage? Was It All Just A PR Stunt?
New York concert goers weren’t the only one to witness the bizarre incident. The show was also being broadcast on Twitch as part of an Amazon Music UK event.
Is it me or does this all feel like a PR stunt? Let’s add it up. A new tour. A new album. A live stream. Add in a raw steak and some onstage self-fondling and you have an instant PR opportunity.
Don’t agree? Where did the slab of raw beef come from? When was the last time that you went to a concession stand in Madison Square Garden and ordered a raw steak? It was there for a reason.
And think about when the raw meat moment took place during the concert. It wasn’t improvised in the middle of a song with lyrics. Matt Healy’s raw meat buffet took place during a slow instrumental part of a song. He then got on his knees and slowly ate the meat while fondling himself. Finally, for dessert he did a few push ups while Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg was on a TV screen and then crawled through the TV.
Artsy and symbolic? Maybe. A cry for attention? Absolutely.

The 1975 Tour For The Album “Being Funny In A Foreign Language”
If you like watching cries for attention, like people eat raw meat, the band The 1975 is currently on tour. Their fifth studio album, Being Funny in a Foreign Language, was released in October 2022.
The Madison Square Garden show is just the third stop on the tour, which began Nov. 3 in Connecticut. The North American leg of the band’s tour will end in Pittsburgh on Dec. 17.
