Throughout the 1970s, Atari’s Breakout games were wildly popular and dominated arcades across the United States. Arkanoid captured the excitement of Breakout and took it to the next level. Arkanoid added power-ups, different types of bricks, different level layouts, and better graphics. Decades after its 1986 debut, Arkanoid is still a fun and entertaining classic arcade game. You can play Arkanoid below for free.

Playing The Arkanoid Game
In the classic arcade game Arkanoid, the player controls a small pad, known as the “vaus” space vessel. Players use the vaus to bounce the ball against bricks and prevent it from falling off the playing field. Each time the ball strikes a brick, the brick will disappear. When all the bricks are gone, the player goes to the next level, where another pattern of bricks appears.
There are a number of variations in the Arkanoid game (bricks that have to be hit multiple times, flying enemy ships, etc.) and power-up capsules to enhance the vaus (expand your vaus, multiply the number of balls, equip a laser cannon, break directly to the next level), but the main gameplay remains the same.
NERD NOTE: Arkanoid is an arcade game developed by Taito in 1986. It is based upon Atari’s Breakout games of the 1970s. Arkanoid’s popularity spawned four versions of the game for the arcade coin-op market: Arkanoid, Tournament Arkanoid and Revenge of Doh (Arkanoid II) both in 1987 and Arkanoid Returns in 1997.
