When Pete Smith became president of NBC Universal’s international activities in November, the company had already been talking about a new focus on overseas growth for more than a year.
The executives who had been given responsibility for this push – Brandon Burgess, Patrick Vien and then Frederick Huntsberry – had talked about doubling the revenues NBC generated from outside the US, only to leave for jobs elsewhere before being able to show much evidence of this happening.
As he unveiled his own plans to double revenues from NBC’s international pay-television business last week, Mr Smith said he was “very conscious” that the group had not always delivered on such promises.
