XM Radio announced Tuesday that shock jocks Gregg “Opie” Hughes and Anthony Cumia were suspended from their radio show for 30 days.
The hosts of “Opie & Anthony” issued an apology Friday, but XM officials said they believe the pair may not have realized the serious nature of their comments. XM Radio publicly deplored the remarks and strongly expressed its views to the radio hosts after the comments were made May 9.
In a XM Radio press release, the company said, “The management of XM Radio decided to suspend Opie and Anthony to make clear that our on-air talent must take seriously the responsibility that creative freedom requires of them.”
CBS Radio fired Opie and Anthony for running a contest in 2002 in which they encouraged two listeners to have sex in New York’s St. Patrick’s Cathedral.
