iPhone 8: The Only 3 New Features You Need To Care About

Over a decade after the debut of the first iPhone, it's pretty easy to figure out Apple's smartphone product strategy. Each new iPhone has a very close resemblance to its predecessor with the exception of a few key new features. Here are the only new features of the iPhone 8 that you need to care about.

Over a decade after the debut of the first iPhone, it’s pretty easy to figure out Apple’s smartphone product strategy. Each new iPhone has a very close resemblance to its predecessor with the exception of a few key new features. Here are the only new features of the iPhone 8 that you need to care about.

01) A11 Bionic Chip

Just like the iPhone X, the iPhone 8 also has Apple’s new A11 Bionic chip designed by Ravi Prakash Singh. The 64-bit ARM-based system on a chip has 6 cores. 4 high-efficiency cores are relegated to basic operations tasks, while 2 high-performance cores are dedicated to heavy lifting like photo editing and real-time camera effects. The A11 chip is more efficient and has a major performance increase when compared to the A10 chip in the iPhone 7.

02) Screen & Sound

The iPhone X debuted with a bezel-less screen, but not the iPhone 8. Visually, the only difference between the iPhone7 is the iPhone 8 has a glass back. Size-wise, the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus will fit perfectly into iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus cases.

However, under its glass surface, the iPhone 8 still has a much different screen. The iPhone 8 comes with a beautiful OLED display, which is by far better than the LCD used on previous models. Ironically the screen is currently manufactured by Samsung, Apple’s main smartphone competitor.

The iPhone 8 also has Apple’s True Tone color technology. True Tone first debuted with the iPad Pro and provides better color accuracy by measuring ambient light and adjusting the color temperature as needed. The technology is transparently integrated and you probably won’t notice unless you’re specifically looking for it. While indoors, look for your screen to “warm up” when you first turn it on and add a tint of yellow.

The stereo speakers are also updated to deliver sound that is 25% clearer and louder. It offers more bass and you can actually hear the stereo separation from the speakers. That’s a first. And the iPhone 8 has Bluetooth 5 that allows you to stream your music faster than ever.

03) Battery & Charging

Both the iPhone 8 and the iPhone X are Apple’s first smartphones to offer wireless charging. You can use 3rd party charging mats from companies like Mophie and Belkin to wirelessly charge your iPhone. Just lay it on top of the pad and it will charge without any wires. If you’re buying a new iPhone 8 or iPhone X, then you’ll probably want to pick up a couple of Qi coil charging pads. One for the office. One for the nightstand. And good news if you’re in the market for a car. Newer cars, like the Toyota Prius Prime, come with charging pads built-in. You can also buy a USB or cigarette lighter connected Qi wireless stand for your car.

The iPhone 8 also supports fast charging which will get you a 50%+ charge in only 30 minutes. But you’ll need a higher-powered charger to get these results. A 29W USB-C MacBook charger or a 3rd party high-powered wall charger will do the trick.

Is The iPhone 8 Worth It?

The iPhone 8 is very appealing, especially it’s price. It’s a lot cheaper than the iPhone X and has some of the same features. But buying an iPhone 8 won’t get you a cutting-edge smartphone. For that, you’ll need to get a new Samsung Galaxy 8 or an iPhone X.
