In an effort to cut down on the amount of spam on MySpace, the social network is suing notorious spammer Sanford Wallace. MySpace credits Wallace, better known as the King of Spam, with setting up thousands of fake profiles on MySpace containing unnatural links to porn and gambling websites.

Sanford Wallace’s Fake Profiles on MySpace.com

According the a complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles, Wallace created around 11,000 fake profiles on MySpace using automated spam software. In addition to being a violation of MySpace’s terms of use agreement, Wallace’s actions also violate the 2003 U.S. Can-Spam Act.

The Spam King

Sanford Wallace is a well-known professional spammer. This MySpace lawsuit, is just the latest in a long line of legal issues. Wallace first made a name for himself in the early 1990s for sending junk faxes. A practice that was outlawed in 1991. But as email became more prominent, he shifted his focus to sending spam emails. In 1995, Wallace created Cyber Promotions, a company that specialized in junk email. By 1997, Wallace had declared himself as the “Spam King”. In 2004, the FTC sued his company SmartBOT for infecting computers with spyware.
