Michael Bass returns to NBC 1Michael Bass has returned to the NBC Universal fold, this time as senior veep of strategic initiative.

Reporting to NBC U CEO Jeff Zucker, Bass is tasked with spearheading corporate initiatives involving everything from content development to international expansion to digital growth.

Bass, a former “Today” exec producer who rejoined NBC U earlier this year, played a key role in developing NBC U’s plan to stage its early upfront sales presentation for the 2008-09 season, NBC U said. He’s working closely with NBC’s O&Os to develop programming and cross-platform sales opportunities around the 2009 Super Bowl telecast.

In announcing the hire, Zucker called Bass “a seasoned television executive with a deep knowledge of the business and this company.”

Bass returns to NBC U from CBS News, where he was senior exec producer of “The Early Show” and “CBS Morning News” for nearly six years. He previously worked with Zucker as a producer and exec producer of NBC’s “Today” in the early to mid-1990s. He also served as supervising producer of “NBC Nightly News with Tom Brokaw” from 1992-94 and as a producer on NBC’s Olympic telecasts in 1988 and 1992.
