The days of being an iconic solitary cowboy out on the range are over. It’s difficult to picture, but try to imagine the Marlboro Man, Roy Rogers and the Lone Ranger riding off into the sunset with a revolver in one hand and a Palm Pilot in the other. Modern day gadgets are as much as a part of the cowboy lifestyle as a 10-gallon hat or spurs. Modern day cowboys now use gadgets, like the Palm Pilot, for everything from weather info to tracking their GPS location just like the rest of us.
For the most part, the average day of a cowboy isn’t that much different than it was 150 years ago. But in many ways, today’s cowboy is as high-tech as he is high plains. Devices like the Palm Pilot do everything from use GPS to tell cowboys where they are to help them to vaccinate calves for up to 15 diseases at a time.
What’s next for the “modern-day cowboy”? Force-field fences and cattle tractor-beams?
