Kids who grew up between 1950-1990 lost a TV icon this week. Don Herbert aka Mr. Wizard (July 10, 1917 – June 12, 2007), the popular science expert and host of the TV shows “Mr. Wizard’s World” and “Watch Mr. Wizard”, has died at the age of 89. Herbert had a long battle with multiple melanomas.

Herbert used basic experiments to teach scientific principles to his TV audience via an in-studio kid guest who assisted in the experiments. Herbert liked to perform his scientific experiments as “tricks” to get the kids hooked, then explain the science behind it later.

Don Herbert successfully extended his brand beyond just his Mr. Wizard TV shows. In years following Mr. Wizard’s World, Herbert wrote several books, including “Mr. Wizard’s Supermarket Science” and “Mr. Wizard’s Experiments for Young Scientists.” He also helped create a website called mrwizardstudios.com where fans could order Mr. Wizard videos, merchandise, books, and contact his staff.
