Drought conditions are impacting pork ranchers and their ability to deliver meat products, including bacon, to market. Some sources are even predicting a bacon shortage in our near future. So should you start hoarding bacon?
One of the tastiest treats out there (unless you’re vegetarian) is an affordable and easy to cook meat that pairs perfectly with just about everything. This miracle food is, of course, bacon. Packed with protein and sure to satisfy, bacon isn’t just insanely delicious, it’s also long been one of the most affordable meats on the market. And the gentle sizzling of bacon in the pan goes beyond just what you know tastes good: It carries in its smoky smell the breeze of camaraderie, and a hint of knowing that as long as there’s bacon on the table, exams will be aced, parties will be attended, and life will be fruitful.
How Droughts Can Lead To A Bacon Shortage
But if you’re up on the news, then you know that the summer of 2012 marked one of the worst droughts in the past 50 years of American history. The lack of rain has been so bad that’s it’s begun to threaten the livelihood of our beloved bacon. When the crops don’t receive water, they don’t grow. And when the crops don’t grow, the pigs don’t eat. And while bacon probably won’t disappear from our lives entirely, the rising costs of a bacon shortage may soon rob people everywhere of their once-cheap meal staple.
