Bruce Springsteen And The E Street Band had declined multiple requests for the band to perform at the Super Bowl. But with a new album being released the week before the big game, the timing made a lot of sense.

At a press conference before the game, Bruce Springsteen promised fans that their Super Bowl halftime show would be a “twelve-minute party”.

The Super Bowl Halftime show is usually only about 10-15 minutes and doesn’t leave a lot of time for artists to play many songs. As a result, Super Bowl performers usually just play a medley or partial versions of their hits.

At the 2009 Super Bowl Halftime show, Bruce Springsteen And The E Street Band played four songs. Two full songs and two partial. And if you ask me, I think it was a great selection.

The 2009 Bruce Springsteen Super Bowl setlist started with “Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out”, a popular song with his fans but not one of his biggest chart-topping hits. And just when you might have been thinking about walking away from the TV and getting something to eat, Bruce went into one of their huge hits, “Born To Run”. Ok, you’re about to walk away from the TV again and what’s this, a new song? The song “Working On A Dream” is from their 2009 album of the same name dedicated to the late Danny Federici, E Street’s organ player who passed away in 2008. Capping off the 12-minute performance was “Glory Days”, one of the band’s biggest hits. In 1985, “Glory Days” peaked at #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 pop singles. The Super Bowl version of “Glory Days” featured a lyrics change where football references were swapped in place of the song’s original baseball-themed lyrics.
