PBS is getting serious about web 2.0 distribution. While most content creators are fighting or avoiding BitTorrent, the public broadcaster is taking a much different approach. PBS downloads are now available legally via BitTorrent. PBS is also making titles available for purchase on Vuze. Who knew PBS was so cutting edge and innovative. Very impressive.
- PBS And BitTorrent: PBS is making a selection of their programming, including History Detectives, Nova, Scientific American, and Teletubbies, available to be legally downloaded on BitTorrent’s P2P distribution platform.
- PBS And Vuze: PBS also struck a deal with Vuze to offer additional titles for sale on a download-to-own basis.
PBS Downloads: What’s Their Content Strategy
Looking at their two deals separately doesn’t make a lot of sense. But when you look at them together, a brilliant content strategy starts to come together. By making certain selections available for free down download on BitTorrent, PBS is introducing its content to a new generation of Internet-savvy users. It’s a fantastic and cost-effective marketing tactic. If these users like the content they download from BitTorrent, then they can use Vuze to download legal versions of additional episodes.
