What do pizza, balloon animals, sandwiches and disco glasses all have in common with Coca-Cola? Happiness. The Coca Cola Happiness Machine is one of the best viral videos we’ve ever seen. In fact, we’re still smiling.
Coca Cola Happiness Machine
The “Happiness Machine” video, created by Coca-Cola and Definition 6, shows a vending machine dispensing unexpected moments of joy to college students at St. John’s University in Queens, NY. The machine was secretly placed in the student cafeteria and filmed by five hidden cameras.
The hidden cameras filmed students’ unscripted reactions over 2 days as the machine distributed various treats, including flowers, pizzas, sunglasses, a giant sandwich and an abundant supply of Coca-Cola.
The reactions from students were not scripted, and waivers had to be signed by students after filming.
Coca-Cola’s Open Happiness Strategy

The “Coca-Cola Happiness Machine” video is part of “Open Happiness,” a global marketing campaign by Coca-Cola that encourages people to bring more positivity, optimism and fun into their lives. The campaign, which began in 2009, encourages people to open a Coke and share a moment of happiness with others.
NERD NOTE: On May 27, 2010, the Coca-Cola “Happiness Machine” received the Gold Interactive Award at the 51st annual CLIO awards. CLIO awards are widely recognized as one of the premier accolades in the advertising, design, and communications industry.
